Untreated, unscreened wastewater has been discharged into Tarakena Bay. Check LAWA.org.nz before visiting beaches.

Due to heavy rainfall, the short outfall has discharged untreated, unscreened wastewater into Tarakena Bay between 11.59 am and 12:38 pm on 8 July 2026. This discharge is currently ongoing and will likely be travelling around the coastline.

Check LAWA before visiting beaches along the south coast.

Otari-Wilton’s Bush Wastewater Upgrade

On behalf of Wellington City Council we are upgrading the wastewater network around the Otari-Wilton Bush carpark to prevent overflows into the Kaiwharawhara Stream.
Overview
Background

A critical wastewater pipe which runs under Churchill Drive in Wadestown is under capacity.

In moderate and heavy rainfall, this pipe overflows into the stormwater network, discharging into Kaiwharawhara Stream and the nearby Otari-Wilton’s Bush.

On behalf of Wellington City Council we are currently developing options to address this capacity issue, in order to increase the resilience of the wastewater network, protect public health and uphold the environmental and cultural values of the Kaiwharawhara.

We expect to undertake construction works over summer to minimise the risk of overflows while construction is underway.
