Untreated, unscreened wastewater has been discharged into Tarakena Bay. Check LAWA.org.nz before visiting beaches.

Due to heavy rainfall, the short outfall has discharged untreated, unscreened wastewater into Tarakena Bay between 11.59 am and 12:38 pm on 8 July 2026. This discharge is currently ongoing and will likely be travelling around the coastline. 

Check LAWA before visiting beaches along the south coast.

14/11/25 Major upgrades completed at Willeston Street

In November our contractors wrapped up the works at Willeston and Victoria Streets, renewing the main wastewater pipe and connecting it to the pump station which drives wastewater from the CBD out to Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.

On November 14th our contractors wrapped up the works at Willeston and Victoria Streets, renewing the main wastewater pipe and connecting it to the pump station which drives wastewater from the CBD out to Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.

There will need to be some final bits of work done in the new year, and we do need to pop the hatch every now and then for routine maintenance, but this will involve much less disruption for pedestrians, drivers and local businesses.

What we are doing

Wellington Water, on behalf of Wellington City Council, are upgrading the wastewater network in the city centre to improve its resilience and plan for future growth.

As part of this, we need to access the underground pump station in Willeston Street to install new pumps and fittings as well as upgrade electrical equipment.

Why are we doing this?

This project is part of a major upgrade of the CBD wastewater network. The upgrade is designed to ensure future resilience, support population growth and protect the environment.
